The Famous Iron Bridge was built by 29 year old Abraham Darby III in 1779 to a design by a Shrewsbury architect. It was a climax of cumulative knowledge from three generations of innovative ironmasters in the cradle of the Industrial Revolution. The bridge weighs 378 tons and is made up of 482 major jointed castings without the use of any bolts. Finished in three months it became a wonder of the world even though it went way over budget and left its builder in debt.
